Renaissance style harmoniously combines elements of luxury and rigor of forms, clarity of lines and splendor of decoration.
The history of the origin of the style
At the beginning of the 14th century, the Renaissance began in Italy – from the French “renaissance”. It meant the revival of ancient culture and people’s interest in creativity. Architects and painters sought to move away from the canons of the past and create something new – revolutionary.
The architecture of the Renaissance is based on ancient forms, the ideas of antiquity – Greece and Rome – proportionality, symmetry. All this replaced the majestic, but somewhat strict Gothic.
Conventionally , the Renaissance is divided into three stages:
- The early Renaissance is close to the transition from the structure of fortresses and temples to the structure of palaces with arches, columns, orders.
- The High Renaissance is called the starting point for the development of the entire style. At this time, the direction is expanding, being integrated into the architecture and art of other countries. Magnificent paintings and frescoes, majestic Renaissance buildings have become masterpieces. Many have survived to our time.
- The late Renaissance was the impetus for Rococo and Baroque styles. This period is characterized by an abundance of antique forms, pretentious elements, luxury both in the exteriors and in the interiors of buildings. Ornate patterns, columns, arches, pilasters, intricate moldings on the ceilings.
The Renaissance lasted until the end of the 16th century and influenced architecture, art, fashion, literature.
Characteristic features of the style
Renaissance architecture is distinguished by monumentality, antique forms, roofs with two slopes, symmetry and massive foundations of buildings with staircases.
The Renaissance interior is characterized by the same monumentality as the exterior of the buildings. The style requires wide areas to unfold to the fullest. Doorways are replaced with arches and columns.
In the rooms, the symmetry of objects, the observance of proportions, the palace splendor of decoration, the motifs of antiquity are important. The furniture is massive in calm tones, while it is necessary to maintain free space and airiness.
The abundance of daylight and soft artificial light in the rooms is very important. Proper lighting will help to highlight every element of the interior and create the necessary mood.
Renaissance interior design
Wide windows, high multi-level ceilings. Renaissance needs scope, so the style looks best in a private house with spacious rooms.
The furniture in the room is arranged around one object and not necessarily in the center. In the living room, it can be a fireplace built into the wall, then a sofa, armchairs, and a coffee table are placed next to it. Or the dining table in the dining room.
Renaissance style in the interior is a well-thought-out and carefully constructed composition in which every detail and object are independent of others, but harmoniously combined with them.
Finishing materials and color palette
Renaissance is characterized by rich natural materials: stone, valuable wood, ivory. The Renaissance era widely used marble in decoration: walls, floors, fireplaces and even doors were lined.
Stone is not often used today because of the high price. It is allowed to replace real marble or sandstone with stylized ceramic tiles.
The Renaissance palette assumes any tones. Beige, cream, milky shades and darker shades are most often used. White and black colors are practically absent in the interior. For textiles and decor, rich blue, green, bordeaux, wine or pastel colors are chosen: blue, pink, olive. Some accents are placed with the help of gold.
When choosing a palette, it is important that the shades smoothly intertwine with each other, and there are no sharp contrasting color transitions. Then it will be possible to create a soothing atmosphere inherent in the Renaissance.
Wall decoration
In the decoration of the walls, preference is given to decorative plaster, panels made of wood or decorated with fabric: velvet, brocade, embossed leather. The patterns are chosen smooth and unobtrusive.
Due to the large areas of the rooms, Renaissance does not require additional visual expansion, so there are few mirrors in the interior. Most often they are present only in the bathroom. Less often – in the bedroom and living room.
Floor decoration
In addition to ceramic tiles, valuable wood species are suitable for finishing floors. Soft carpets with oriental ornaments will help to add comfort to the premises.
Ceiling decoration
In the rooms of the Renaissance, the ceilings were high, vaulted, decorated with gilded stucco and coffers. Decorating rooms in the Renaissance style today it is worth choosing multi-level structures with an abundance of carved details. Ceilings made of varnished wood will fit seamlessly into the interior.
Furniture
With all the massiveness of the furniture, it should be practical and not clutter up the space. Each item fulfills its role. Simple geometric shapes and natural wood are welcome. No plastic or metal. Furniture is decorated with inlay, carved elements, gilding.
Shades of furniture from light tones – cream, milk – to dark brown and chocolate. Almost all the furniture of the 18th century is suitable for furnishing the room. Antique sideboards, secretaries with drawers upholstered in velvet, rectangular or polygonal dining tables, chairs and couches upholstered in soft fabric, as well as chests with gilding or painting.
In living rooms and bedrooms, it is necessary to place a low desk on carved legs. The bed is necessarily decorated with a canopy made of light fabric on twisted wooden columns.
Decor
The Renaissance interior will not do without accessories. They allow you to create an atmosphere of wealth, splendor and finish the composition. But each accessory should be carefully selected.
The walls are decorated with pilasters and reproductions of Renaissance paintings. For windows, forged cornices are selected and heavy curtains are hung in the floor, decorating with pickups with brushes. The fabric is chosen shiny with embroidered patterns and shiny thread.
All kinds of niches are decorated with frescoes, and bronze statuettes are installed inside. Lighting devices – forged chandeliers, candelabra, candlesticks and floor lamps – also perform a decorative function. Placed locally, they attract attention with unusual shapes.
Interior design of different rooms in Renaissance style
Living room
A spacious room in light shades does not require a large amount of furniture. The composition can be built around a real or artificial fireplace, placing only the most necessary. Sofa, chairs, coffee table, secretary or sideboard with glass doors. Porcelain or ceramic dishes in delicate shades are placed on the shelves.
If the idea and the area allow, a piano is placed in the living room. The ceiling is decorated with elegant stucco, a stylized antique chandelier and wall lamps are hung. The windows are covered with light curtains, choosing a shade in harmony with the interior. Dilute the severity will help live plants.
Kitchen and dining room
The walls are finished “like marble”. You can choose an island-type kitchen set and build a composition around it or take a dining table as a basis. The kitchen is decorated in delicate colors: cream, beige, milk with golden elements. Furniture is chosen in harmony with the shades of the ceiling and walls. Interestingly, unlike other rooms, the kitchen is not decorated with stucco.
Of the lighting fixtures, a chic chandelier is mandatory, and during romantic dinners, candles are lit in metal candelabra.
Bedroom
The center of the recreation room is a luxurious bed. In addition to her in the bedroom there is a chest of drawers, a dressing table, sometimes with a mirror, a wardrobe for linen or books. A small chandelier is hung over the bed. Lamps with lampshades without embroidery are placed on bedside tables.
It is better not to decorate the ceilings with stucco. Glossy stretch options or drywall are suitable. The transition between the ceiling and the wall can be decorated with a carved cornice.
Parquet in brown tones is suitable for finishing the floor in the Renaissance interior.
The decoration is gilded carvings, ornate lines and patterns on dressers and beds. Paintings in the Renaissance style or reproductions of masterpieces by great artists are hung on the walls. A vase with live cut flowers is placed on the dressing table, and plants are placed in the corners.
Bathroom
A spacious bathroom assumes a minimum of items. A bathroom or shower system, a sink, a pedestal on carved legs with a mirror and a suspended toilet, if the room is combined with a bathroom. All plumbing is in white, cream or milk tones. The walls and floor are finished with ceramic tiles. Wall panels and sconces act as decor.
The Renaissance-style interior is grandeur and luxury, which can be achieved by carefully following the principles of style, thinking through the composition and any little things.
